Principal’s Report

Our rescheduled first Working Bee for the year is on next weekend, Saturday 5th April. We are planning on having a BBQ on the day and an Easter Egg Hunt! It will be held from 10am to 1pm, and we will be doing mulching, weeding and maybe even some construction! We hope to see lots of families there for a day of fun and fruitful hard work!

Last Friday 21st March, members from the local Emerald and District Rotary Club joined our assembly to present the new 2025 Early Act Club members with their certificates and badges. Thank you to Rotarians Kerith Cummins and Aly Bowyer for their support in running the Club, along with Jacquie Forsythe and Hollie Boniface from EPS. Thank you also to President Kelly McAllister and Youth Committee Director Marcus Adams for attending and making the presentations. After an excellent year of community service in 2024, we are looking forward to seeing what impact the Early Act Club will have this year!

Teachers are currently completing Progress Reports for all of their students. These will be available as of next Thursday 3rd April, in the afternoon, via Compass. This report is designed to give you a snapshot of how your child is going in regards to their effort in class, work habits and learning behaviours for Term 1. This is a new approach for 2025 to help keep parents and carers informed – please let me know if you have any queries.

A big THANK YOU to the staff and parents who supported our students at the Grade 5 Camp at Phillip Island recently – Jason Dangerfield, Jacquie Forsythe, Bianca Appleby, Cathlin Smart, Peta Woodyard, Sarah Muratore, Emma Barkley, Matt Kinniburgh and Jackie Pope. The Cockatoo Little Athletics Club will have the canteen open this Thursday 27th March for EDEC athletics.  The school sports are our biggest fundraiser and allows us to maintain and buy new equipment for the athletics club and our local schools to use and enjoy.  We would love you to support us.

On Tuesday, 25th March, Year 6 students had their “Election.”

This term, we have been completing a Civics and Citizenship unit where we have been learning about the different levels of government and how they all work together to run the country. As part of this learning, we held a Year 6 election where each class created a different ‘party.’

The three parties in the election were:

  • Porty’s Purple Party: Makes you feel seen, heard, and valued, and can lead you with fun, fundraising, and education.
  • Pink People Party: Leads you with persistence, determination, and resilience.
  • Green Applebeans: Can lead you with kindness, respect, and all the ‘nesses’: friendliness, kindness, inclusiveness, friendliness, happiness, and ‘Applebeanness.’

During the day before the election voting, we also had a ‘Party Debate’ session, where each party’s ministers stood up and presented their policies in the key areas of education, sport, environment, and finance. The Deputy Prime Ministers also spoke about their party values.

The Year 4s are also learning about civics and citizenship, so we invited them along to watch all the speeches in the ‘Party Debate’. For example, the sports teams from each party had to choose one of the sports members to present their ideas in front of the whole of Year 4. Afterward, the Year 4s were given time to think about which party they wanted to vote for. After lunch, they came back and voted separately on which party they thought had the best policies.

Porty’s Purple Party were the winners of the inaugural Year 6 election. However, the votes were very close, and we congratulate all three parties on their campaigns. Not just the Purple Party, but all three parties led with kindness and determination on the day.

Finally, we decided no election is complete without a ‘Democracy Sausage.’ We started off by writing a letter to Woolworths, explaining our unit of work and asking for a donation for our election day. We ended up getting the sausages and bread for free. We had some teachers cooking the barbecue, and two of the teachers were in charge of the sauce. A big thanks to Emerald Woolworths, teachers, and staff for making this election possible.

EarlyAct is underway for 2025 and we have an exciting project coming up but before we can get started we need your help.

We require about 25 empty plastic 2 litre drink bottles.

If you have any that you could spare, please leave them outside Mrs Forsythe’s classroom.

We look forward to sharing our new project with you very soon!

If so please bring them to the Emerald SES to be recycled. Emerald Primary School is now a registered donation partner with the Victorian Container Deposit Scheme. So your rubbish can be recycled and each empty container earns 10c. Please donate the money you collect to our school, so we can fundraise for more drink taps on the school oval.

If you pack a juice box or an up and go in your child’s lunch box, please inform them that there will be a designated bin in their classroom for the ten cent bottles and cartons to be collected in.

In addition, parents can donate eligible containers from home directly to the SES and nominate EPS to receive the funds. This is a great opportunity to support our school.

Kind regards the Early Act Team
