Principal’s Report
A reminder to any families with Prep students starting in 2024 that Enrolment Forms are due by Friday 28th July. Please contact the Office on 5968 4311 or by email : emerald.ps@education.vic.gov.au to ask for a form. Please also contact us if you have any queries. It would be great if you could pass this information on to any families you know of who may wish to enrol their Prep child for next year. Families will be advised by Friday 11th August regarding confirmation of their placement at EPS.
During coming weeks and throughout Term 3, we have Monash Health workers at school delivering the ‘Feeling Safe Together Program’ to all students in Grades Prep to Grade 5. The Grade 6 Students undertook the program in Term 1, however, there was then a staffing shortage for the program and it was unable to proceed at that time. The team are now able to conduct the remainder of the program for the whole school. The focus of the program is protective behaviours and the sessions take a proactive approach.
This program has been designed following research into protective behaviour education programs from both Australia and abroad. Schools are in unique positions to be able to reach children to raise awareness on a range of issues that can impact on a child’s learning and development. The program is aimed at raising awareness of safety, our personal safety and the environment around us. The sessions are tailored to be age-appropriate.
Research clearly states that children who understand prevention techniques are not only at less risk of being abused or bullied, they are also more self-confident and better able to judge the safety of situations they meet in daily life. However, we must remember, it is ultimately the responsibility of the adults caring for the child to seek support or report if they are concerned about a child’s wellbeing.
When we talk to children about staying safe in a calm and caring way, we are indicating to the children that if they are confused about something that is happening, they should never feel that something is SO bad that they can’t tell anyone. We all have the right to feel safe!
Please contact myself, Carice D’Rozario (Assistant Principal) or Bianca Appleby (Student Wellbeing & Inclusion Leader) at school if you have any queries.
Cardinia Council reps are engaging with our school community on the upgrade of Pepi’s Land BMX track in Emerald. They are visiting tomorrow with Grade 4, 5 and 6 students to find out what they would like to see in the upgrade project. Last year, they worked with our Grade 4, 5 and 6 students on the development of the Worrell Reserve Youth Plaza and Skate Park project. They have a professional skate and BMX designer coming along to explain the features of a BMX track and help to guide their ideas. There will also be a session at recess when any students from the other grade levels who are interested can come and give feedback.
Well done to the teams of Grade 6 students and their families who braved the cold at Sandown track last weekend to participate in a fun day of Human-Powered Vehicle racing. Please see the report and photos elsewhere in the newsletter. Thank you very much to the Grade 6 Team of teachers, including Lisa Ward, Ben Kolb, Craig Appleby and Jacquie Forsythe for their support of this event.

Breaking up is hard to do!!!!!!!!
It’s time for the canteen to break up with single use straws, these will not be available in 2023
More than 8 million tonnes of plastic enters the world’s ocean every year and over 90% is single use plastic.
So let’s say bye bye to straws and hello to BYO. We highly recommend reusable options over all disposables. Students can purchase a reusable silicone straw in its own case with the school Emblem for $4 from the canteen (over the counter or via online) or uniform shop.

Free Dress Day – EB Fundraiser
Free Dress Day – EB Fundraiser

Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is the name for a group of rare inherited skin disorders that cause the skin to become very fragile. Please come to school in free dress on this day with a touch of blue and/or wings to show your support. One of our students experiences this condition and her family supports us to conduct this fundraising for this day, which goes to the wider cause to find treatments and cures. The Walk for Wings event was held back at […]
